Phidgets 2006: Advanced Design for creative interactivity

Geraldine Fitzpatrick

Students on the HCCS masters degree take a course called "HCCS Advanced Topics" in which they are expected to engage with the problems and opportunities encountered in developing ubiquitous computing for physical public spaces. This project will further develop and extend the students' experience in a number of ways.

The Sussex learning zone will be given as their problem domain, allowing engagement with "real" rather than theoretical PBL. The usual "phidgets" kit available on the course will be supplemented by additional elements allowing the artefacts created to interact with the equipment in the Zone. This will allow the more technically able students to go well beyond the constraints imposed by the equipment usually available. They will also have increased access to technical support from a HCT / CETL team member. The artefacts and equipment developed will remain available in the Zone.
