"CREATE" Project: creativity, e-learning and teacher education

Avril Loveless & Keith Turvey

The "CREATE" project arises from evaluation of a module on the BA (QTS) programme, 'Creativity & Digital Media Technologies'. This module, the focus of which is the impact of digital media technologies on creativity in teaching and learning, has been the subject of research and development supported by the Teacher Training Agency (TTA) 2003-2005,. The CETL "CREATE" project will be an extension of this research and development. It will involve two groups of BA(QTS) students in the Third and Fourth years, who are ICT specialists in teaching 5-14 year old pupils. The focus will be on four new themes which have not yet been addressed:

  • Evaluation of multimedia ICT tools for assessment of creative practice in a 4th year module. For example, 'Videopapers', an application piloted by the Graduate School of Education, University of Bristol for assessment of student analysis of teaching practice, will be a starting point (Olivero, Sutherland, & John, 2004), whilst students will also be given choices with a range of multimedia tools;
  • Design of linked modules in Years Three and Four to provide progressive experience for the 2003/7 student cohort of personal and professional creative use of digital media in the Primary school curriculum;
  • Development of models of pedagogy in HE and school-based elements of the modules;
  • Exploration of tools and techniques for observing and assessing creative practice.
