Return to September 2005 Funded Projects Juliette Buss & Helen Smith The Brighton & Sussex Medical School, in collaboration with the Brighton Photo Biennial will undertake a fifteen month project to develop a new, transferable model for teaching and learning that improves learners' ability to use and understand the relevance, importance and transferability of their own creative skills. Brighton based documentary photographer Tom Wichelow will develop a programme of practical workshops and critical seminars to introduce medical students to contemporary documentary photography in order to explore similarities between the skills needed to practice medicine and those needed to create photographs - grounded in the common territory of observation. As well as learning new practical and critical skills, as a significant part of this project students will be asked to reflect on the relationship between these activities and their full time studies, and the impact this experience has had on them as young doctors. The project furthers the aims of the CETL by using artist led collaborative practice (CETL aim: new creative methodologies) to create a new model for teaching and learning, relevant for numerous courses, that promotes creativity as a transferable skill (CETL aim: new skills, cross disciplinary skills). The outcomes will include a report, a case study and students will exhibit their outcomes (photographs) in order to raise awareness of the aims of the project, and the profile of the partners involved. |
