HOBNOB - student event 15th October 2009

Poster for first Hobnob event

Organised by students for students, ‘Hobnob’ will provide a monthly programme of free social events to encourage social networking between different disciplines and invite feedback on recent events within InQbate . Supported by refreshments and acts by musicians, artists and creative practitioners, each ‘Hobnob’ will include exhibits, performances and ‘Pecha Kucha’ style presentations from students who have collaborated on projects, as well as interdisciplinary project matchmaking between students from different departments. Each ‘Hobnob’ would be centred on a broad theme to focus participants’ projects and give the event an attractive ‘limited edition’ feel (Autumn Term: Fakery, Wrapping, Apertures).

In between each Hobnob, weekly generating sessions will follow up student ‘matches’ and progress the organisation of the next event.

Rationale:

With recent projects such as the Denis Healey exhibition, and events provided by the Visual Culture Society, it is clear that students from different disciplines are capable of and successful at collaborating on creative projects. Having access to a mix of skills and being able to identify their own skills as valuable, results in very creative and exciting pieces of work, at the same time as enhancing their employability, and better equipping them to work with a range of people after their studies. Providing a platform and a forum that is vibrant and social, for students to meet and ‘cook up’ ideas together, will hugely increase the level of this sort of activity among students at Sussex.

A second motivation centres on student societies. Currently few collaborate effectively with each other, despite financial incentives from the Student Union. Hobnob will encourage and stimulate these connections, and help to make Sussex campus an even more exciting and vibrant place to be.

Aims & outcomes:

The Hobnob programme aims to result in:

§  Increased networking between students from different disciplines, and therefore access to collaborative project working and showcasing.

§  Increased employability through wider access to different people and skills.

§  Increased dynamism and vitality surrounding extra-curricular participation at Sussex.

§  A social atmosphere in which to celebrate and raise awareness of achievements and ongoing networking and collaboration.
