Emotional Design

Some products include emotional messages that are unconsciously recognised by their customers. These unconsciously recognised messages add important value to products. As such, products may evoke thoughts, feelings and associations which one links to the commodity, or assumes that others must associate with it. This culturally agreed meaning of objects allows a person to communicate their identity through products; it allows them to project a desirable image to others, to express social status and to make visible their personal characteristics.

Having said that, how well are we aware of these qualities of design products?

How many designers spend enough time investigating it?

Do designers share the same emotional understanding
as their final users do?

This workshop attempts to address these issues by introducing three 'Emotional Design Models' and their applications. It will be followed with few brief exercises to establish the concept of emotional design. A little previous experience in product design is needed and participants are expected to be interested in learning about 'Non-rational Issues' in design. Also all are requited to contribute to the session by showing a good manner of "Deep-Emotional Thinking"!

Reza Mortezaei, researcher, lecturer and practitioner in product design, will be running this session.
